Climatologists spoke about the risk of a global catastrophe due to the domino effect

by time news

A warming of the Earth’s climate by two degrees will lead to a domino effect and change the life of half of the world’s population, according to a study by climatologists from Germany and Sweden, published in the journal Earth System Dynamics.

It is emphasized that this is not a forecast, but a risk analysis. The authors of the work managed to recreate 3 million scenarios for the development of the Earth’s climate, in 30% of which there is a domino effect with irreversible changes.

For the domino effect, the Earth will be warmed by two degrees. It will lead to the melting of ice sheets in the Arctic, Antarctica and Greenland. Warm currents in the Atlantic will cool down, due to which the amount of rainfall in the forests of the Amazon will decrease, and it will turn into a savannah. To avoid such a scenario, it is necessary to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

Scientists periodically point out the risks associated with the technogenic development of civilization and the consequences of climate change. In particular, the thawing of permafrost in Russia threatens to erode the soil under the foundations of settlements outside the Arctic Circle, which can lead to emergencies.
