Almeerder At the end of June, Rajiv Karamat and thirteen other people who, like himself, suffer from ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, will climb the Grossglockner. This is with 3798 meter the highest mountain in Austria.

During Expedition IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) catches everyone money. With this money, Crohn & Colitis NL organizes three lifestyle events for people with IBD. Karamat also wants to send a signal with it: “I want to show people who have a gloomy view that it will all work out,” says de Almouder.

In addition, everyone hopes that this action will increase awareness of the disease.

Chosen

Last year there was a call for IBD patients in the magazine of patient organization Crohn & Colitis NL to sign up for the climb. After being selected from more than 80 applicants, 35-year-old Karamat was chosen as one of the participants.

For people without IBD, this climb is already difficult, but IBD patients have it even more difficult. IBD is very unpredictable. People with these diseases have symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fatigue.

Karamat now trains four to five times a week, of which he is on the basketball court at Almere Pioneers, the basketball club, at least twice. Together with the fourteen other IBD patients, he has met more often in recent weeks. They have also taken long walks in smaller groups and everyone is training themselves.

Back to start

Karamat herself has ulcerative colitis. This is inflammation in the colon. After the medicines didn’t work, Karamat got a stoma. After the operation, he did not expect to be able to do things he did before: “In the beginning, after the operation, I couldn’t even walk 100 meters,” says Karamat.

That’s why he built everything up slowly. He started with short runs, then 1000 meters and now running five kilometers. In addition, he kickboxes again, which he also did before the operation. Karamt has also picked up basketball again.

“This is a challenge for myself to get to the top after all I’ve been through,” says Karamt. He can already picture his climb: “I can already see myself standing at the top, looking back at the road I have followed to get here”.
