The number of people who are afraid of going to hospital has increased again. The development is astonishing compared to the pandemic years. One thing in particular is of great concern.

The proportion of Germans who are afraid of being hospitalized has increased again. According to a survey commissioned by the KKH Kaufmännische Krankenkasse in Hanover, 27 percent of Germans aged 18 to 70 are currently afraid of hospital treatment.

In 2019 the rate was 29 percent, in 2020 it fell to 17 percent and rose from 19 to 25 percent in 2021 and 2022, as the KKH announced.

“The development shows that people had significantly more trust in the hospital landscape during the Corona years,” said Sonja Hermeneit, doctor at KKH. The reasons for this could have been, among other things, a more conscious use of scarce resources or stricter security precautions during this time.

One in two people who were worried about a hospital stay in the survey (51 percent) said that they had already had bad experiences. 46 percent of those concerned said they had heard bad things about the treatment in the hospital.

“By far the greatest fear – as in previous years – is of infection with a hospital germ,” it said. This concern was expressed by 71 percent of those who expressed concern in the survey. Based on the overall group of 18 to 70 year olds, that is 19 percent.

A clear majority of those surveyed (84 percent) believe hospital reform is necessary to improve the quality of care and treatment, it said. 46 percent even considered this to be absolutely necessary.
