Do-joon Yoon, Chairman of Dongwha Pharm, launches ‘National Life Health Campaign’
Pathogens spread through toilet water swirls… Bacteria in the shower can cause respiratory infections
Maintain meticulous hygiene even after the pandemic, such as washing hands and turning off the water with paper towels.

Dongwha Pharmaceutical Chairman Do-jun Yoon (pictured), who is a professor at Kyung Hee University School of Medicine (Department of Psychiatry), always hands out national health campaign stickers that can be easily attached at home, work, and public places whenever he meets people. The sticker contains information such as closing the toilet lid and flushing after urinating or defecating in the bathroom toilet, and disassembling and cleaning the shower head periodically. These are things related to hygiene management in our daily lives that we easily overlook.

From the 1st, the government lowered the novel coronavirus infection (Corona 19) crisis level from ‘vigilance’, the second highest, to ‘concern’, the lowest. Now you don’t have to wear a mask in the hospital. Due to COVID-19, it has become easy to forget the hygiene concepts that were established in daily life. On the 5th, in celebration of ‘World Hand Hygiene Day’ established by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2009, we heard from Chairman Yoon about the know-how for hygiene management in everyday life that is easy to miss.

―Please explain the motivation for the National Life Health Campaign.

“With COVID-19, many people have become aware of the importance of hygiene management in their daily lives, but recently they seem to be forgetting it again. There are primary, secondary, and tertiary types of prevention, and primary prevention, which prevents disease before it occurs, is the most important. In order to raise awareness of the importance of primary prevention, we are conducting a campaign to inform not only employees but also the general public of the importance from 2022 when the spread of COVID-19 subsides. “The reason we created the stickers was to encourage more people to participate.”

―There is also information about closing the toilet lid and flushing.

“Often, water is flushed with the toilet lid open. In this case, the vortex created as the water drains causes contaminated fine water droplets to spread out of the toilet bowl for more than 1 m, and pathogens can remain in the air for 4 hours. For this reason, closing the toilet lid and flushing is beneficial to your family’s health.”

―Should I disassemble the shower head and clean it?

As bacteria can cling to the shower head and form a biofilm, disassembling and cleaning the head periodically helps prevent infection (see picture). Provided by Dongwha Pharmaceutical

“It is also a lifestyle hygiene management method that is easily overlooked. Usually, it is rare to open the shower head and disinfect it. However, various bacteria can clump together in the shower and form a biofilm. In particular, non-tuberculous mycobacteria may mix with water vapor and cause respiratory infections. For this reason, disassembling and cleaning the shower head periodically helps prevent infection. Shower products that disassemble when you turn the head are easily available on the market. The same goes for sink head faucets. “For cleaning, it is best to use a sink and basin faucet that can be removed by turning.”

―Hand hygiene related information is also on the sticker.

“We’re talking about washing your hands at the sink, drying your hands, using a paper towel and turning off the faucet. This is to prevent cleanly washed hands from being re-contaminated by germs on the faucet. “Use a used paper towel to pull the bathroom door handle to open the door and place a trash can near the door so you can throw it away right away.”

―Is there anything hygiene-related that must be taken care of during this time? .

“In May, there are especially many outdoor activities with family members, which increases the possibility of infection through contact with other people in public places. “I hope this will be a month for healthy and happy families by paying more attention to hand washing, which many people know but can easily miss.”

―How do you plan to spread the campaign in the future?

“We are planning a plan to spread the national health campaign into everyday life. We also plan to create a booklet in English and disseminate it widely to foreigners. I wish more people would join in on hygiene habits and live together in a world where diseases occur less often. “We will continue to strive to contribute to improving the health of the world’s population.”
