The collegial government led by Prime Minister Christian Ntsay met yesterday in Mahazoarivo the ambassadors of the seven member countries of the G7 including Switzerland, the United States, France, Japan, the United Kingdom, the Union European and Germany. The content of the discussions was not communicated by the two parties. The discussions lasted 2 hours and no information leaked from the meeting, the Prime Minister reported on his Facebook page last night.
After the controversy over the establishment of collegial government and the validation of Andry Rajoelina’s candidacy by the High Constitutional Court (HCC), this meeting in high places was expected. Four days ago, 11 candidates for the presidential election on November 9 were received at the headquarters of the European Union in Ankorondrano. The same ambassadors present in Mahazoarivo yesterday attended the meeting with this collective of candidates who are contesting the decisions of the HCC.
These countries are the main contributors to the Basket Fund intended for the next elections in the country. The European Union, France, as well as Germany thanks to the common fund of the Strengthening the Electoral and Democratic Processes in Madagascar (RPEDEM) project. A project which aims in particular to contribute to a serene environment conducive to the holding of credible, transparent, peaceful and inclusive elections in 2023-2024. However, this is far from being the case at present. The United States and the United Kingdom also participate in the Basket Fund managed by the UNDP, and Japan has provided the CENI and its branches with cars and motorcycles.
The recent controversial decisions of the HCC were certainly at the center of debate yesterday, as was the organization of the elections. It should be noted that the CENI does not yet have the total budget necessary for the election scheduled for November 9. Partner countries have already contributed 10 billion ariary, or even 15 billion ariary. An equivalent amount still needs to be found in the coming weeks to complete everything.
