BOLZANO. Sasa, the in-house company of the Province and the Municipalities of Bolzano, Merano and Laives, is taking further measures to improve the safety of passengers and drivers. On 30 buses that cover interurban lines, closed cockpits.

Thanks to this change, the number of buses in the Sasa fleet that now have a separate driving area increases.

“Our effort is aimed at doing everything possible to make travel on public transport pleasant and safe for everyone”, says the provincial councillor for Mobility Daniel Alfreideraccording to which “the changed social conditions also require new measures”.

The new cabins were designed specifically for Sasa buses and allow interaction between passengers and drivers for all key activities, such as ticket sales. At the same time, however, the walls provide a greater sense of security, especially during rush hour or in the event of unforeseen events.

To implement the intervention, the entire external facade of the driving area was modified with the installation of glass side bulkheads. The cover glass is tempered and complies with current regulations. “These closed cabins offer our drivers greater protection and create a safe space,” says the president of Sasa Astrid Kofler: “Potential intruders are thus discouraged.”

The new driver’s cabins are part of a broader package of measures to improve safety on the public transport network in South Tyrol. The presence of supervisors and security personnel on many lines had already been increased in the summer and autumn of 2023.

Furthermore, since May 2024, all the control staff of the in-house company Sasa have been equipped with bodycams and at the beginning of June a protocol was signed for a more intense collaboration with the Police Headquarters. “Safety is our top priority”, underlines the general director of Sasa Roger Rossi of My“the attacks on drivers are isolated incidents. However, we are making an effort to ensure the maximum level of safety for our drivers by implementing multiple interventions.”
