Star Citizen Developer Releases $48,000 Ship Bundle

Controversial space simulator Star Citizen is making headlines yet again as developer Cloud Imperium Games announces the release of a ship bundle that comes with a staggering $48,000 price tag.

Dubbed the Legatus 2953 pack, this exorbitant collection of virtual ships is set to arrive in the first quarter of 2024, despite the fact that the game has not officially launched yet.

According to the item page for the Legatus 2953 pack, it includes over 175 vessels from various manufacturers, making it the “definitive armada” for fleet commanders. However, there’s a catch – it appears that the pack is only available to members at a certain tier of Star Citizen’s Chairman’s Club, which requires spending $10,000 on other in-game items to achieve.

For existing fans of Star Citizen, the high price of the Legatus bundles may not come as a shock. The game has a history of selling pricey bundles to its biggest spenders, with each new iteration bringing even more ships and a higher price tag.

Cloud Imperium has defended the high cost of the bundles, stating that they are intended for players to deploy ships and items across organizations, corporations, and guilds. Many players reportedly roll over credit from buying cheaper bundles to be able to afford the new, more expensive ones.

Star Citizen has long been a source of controversy in the gaming industry, with some critics going as far as to label it a scam. Nonetheless, the game has managed to raise an impressive $658,161,596 from more than five million accounts, according to the developer’s website.

As the gaming community continues to debate the merits and future of Star Citizen, it remains to be seen how the release of the $48,000 ship bundle will be received.

IGN has reached out to Cloud Imperium for further clarification on the pricing structure of the bundle.
