CNDD-FDD vs Burundi Bwa Bose, the face-to-face takes shape

by time news

In view of the elections scheduled for next year, a new political coalition has just emerged. The culmination of several weeks of negotiations to constitute a force capable of establishing itself in challenger serious about the CNDD-FDD.

That’s it, the time has come. The smell of the 2025 elections is already being felt. In a decree signed by the President of the Republic on December 7, 2024, the population is called to go to the polls from June 2025. This decree recalls certain legal bases and allows you to discover the conditions required to stand for election as a candidate. .

However, an article concerning the candidacy of independents particularly attracted attention. Indeed, article 2, paragraph 3 stipulates that a “a member of a governing body of a political party may only stand as a candidate in these elections as an independent after the expiration of a period of two years since his or her ousting or resignation from his or her political party. origin “. For several observers, this article is an attempt to dismiss Agathon Rwasa, who left the head of the CNL and who was until then presented as the main challenger of the eagle party. Many suspect that a broad coalition against the CNDD-FDD is unlikely to succeed due to the conditions imposed by the presidential decree. In the meantime, a coalition has just emerged, but without the Rwasa camp, which remains deprived of political training for the moment.

A coalition with a thousand challenges

But why talk about Rwasa, when the coalition in question is made up of Frodebu, Codebu, CNDD and FEDS Sangira? The reason is simple. Any informed observer of current political dynamics must have noted President Frodebu’s recurring calls for the formation of a coalition capable of competing with the Eagle Party. To make this idea a reality, he and other political leaders went to Tanzania to develop this project alongside Rwasa, who currently does not have a political party. Therefore, some wonder if this bet will hold, while the internal conflict in the CNL is not yet resolved and the case is still pending before the courts, which complicates Rwasa’s effective participation in the coalition recently. established under the name of « Burundi For All ».

Obviously, the path to 2025 seems strewn with pitfalls for the Rwasa camp and for this newborn of the political class, who will have to do without, at least officially for the moment, this heavyweight of the opposition. Furthermore, although the approval of this coalition is still pending, nothing is certain, neither on the side of regulators nor on the side of public opinion. The latter keeps in mind other coalitions, born in the recent past, which did not survive long, as the political environment was unfavorable, as the interests of their members were divergent. Could 2025 be different? It would be risky to answer this question, but the indicators seem to prove the pessimists right.

The least we can say is that the pre-electoral context which is coming is not the most serene. And this is worrying for Burundi which has just held an investors’ forum, which promised billions of dollars of investments in the country. Promises and commitments which will need to be reassured about the business climate. However, for this climate to be truly favorable, it requires a stable political environment. It is an understatement to say that one cannot be done without the other.
