Beloved Detroit Synagogue Leader Remembered at Funeral Service

Detroit, Michigan – Friends and family gathered together on Sunday to remember Samantha Woll, a prominent leader in the Detroit synagogue community who was tragically found fatally stabbed over the weekend. The packed funeral service was filled with memories of Woll’s kindness, generosity, and dedication to helping others.

Woll’s younger sister, Monica Woll Rosen, spoke emotionally during the service, describing her sister as someone who deeply desired peace for the world and fought tirelessly for the well-being of everyone, regardless of their background. Woll Rosen added, “You brought us light. Our world is shattered without you.”

The Detroit Police Department reported that Woll’s body was discovered Saturday morning with multiple stab wounds at her home. Authorities have not yet identified a suspect or determined a motive for the killing. Police Chief James E. White stated that there is no evidence to suggest that the crime was motivated by antisemitism.

Woll held various leadership positions within the Isaac Agree Downtown Synagogue, including president of the board and member of the ritual committee. Rabbi Ariana Silverman praised Woll for her personal relationships with people from different backgrounds and her dedication to building bridges and fighting for social justice causes.

Throughout the funeral, friends and loved ones shared memories of Woll’s infectious smile, giving spirit, and willingness to listen. Her sister mentioned that the last text Woll sent just before her death was a heart emoji to a friend, “just because.” Woll’s belief in humanity was emphasized, with Rabbi Steven Rubenstein stating, “She believed in humanity, which, of course, is a terrible irony for today.”

The investigation into Woll’s death is ongoing, with the Detroit Police Department working in collaboration with the FBI to gather forensic evidence and interviews. The Michigan State Police have also been assigned to support local police in the case.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences, saying, “She was a source of light, a beacon in her community who worked hard to make Michigan a better place.” Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who had worked with Woll, described her as the nicest person she had ever met.

In an obituary, Woll’s loved ones described her unwavering commitment to living in the moment and seeing the good in everyone she met. Woll was also an artist, leaving behind paintings that now serve as a reminder of her presence.

As the funeral service came to a close, Woll’s sister addressed her, expressing disbelief and grief over her tragic loss. “A light has gone out in Detroit, in our hearts, for our people, for the world,” she said.

As the investigation continues, the community mourns the loss of Samantha Woll, a compassionate leader who will be remembered for her tireless activism and her unwavering kindness towards others.
