The United States warned Russia that it would conduct an operation in Syria, CNN reports, citing a Pentagon source. During the special operation, the leader of the terrorist group “Islamic State” (IS, banned in Russia) Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi was killed.
According to CNN, the US military notified Russia in advance that they would be working in an area in northwestern Syria “for a certain period of time” and asked them to “stay away from this area.” White House press secretary Jen Psaki said during the briefing that she had no information about whether the United States coordinated its actions in Syria with Russia.
Washington’s special operation was the largest since October 2019, when the Americans tried to capture the previous leader of the ISIS, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Several civilians were also killed during the February operation. The Russian Foreign Ministry called for an investigation because of this.
