DIG/ Since August 1, 2023, some of the agents of the National Interior and International Navigation Company (CNNII) in Libreville have been on strike to demand thee legitimate payment on the merits, of 17 salary installments accumulated since 2019.
A public limited company belonging to the State, the maritime company is, following its predecessor the National Company of Interior Navigation (CNI) dissolved since 2013, confronted with difficulties which threaten its viability and its competitiveness.
Among these are the lack of logistical and naval equipment belonging to it, the accumulated financial losses and the inability to cover salary costs due to overstaffing.
“The proper functioning of companies in the maritime transport sector requires modern infrastructure and adequate equipment.
With regard to the CNNII, the loading docks are degraded, the handling equipment is defective, and the fleet of ships is obsolete and at a standstill.
For its maritime operations, the company is dependent on the rental of the vessel “Le Celeste”, the rental costs of which are, moreover, prohibitive”, protests a senior executive of the company.
According to him, this situation considerably affects its operational efficiency. Thus, to guarantee the sustainability of its mission, the implementation of far-reaching reforms must be accelerated by all the stakeholders.
“Since its creation, the CNNII has accumulated financial losses. High operating costs, loss of market share, low investment in logistics and naval equipment have had a negative impact on the company’s income, which can no longer support its expenses and accumulates this causes chronic financial losses that jeopardize its economic viability”, he warns. Before adding:
“The number of employees greatly exceeds the actual needs of the company, resulting in an unsustainable financial burden.
Salary costs weigh heavily on the company’s already precarious finances.
The redeployment of staff should therefore constitute an imperative to guarantee the financial stability and sustainability of this activity of collective interest”.
