The international portal CNN in Spanish published an article criticizing the President Gustavo Petro, which this August 7 marks two years since he took office as the president of Colombia. There is an analysis to be made of the promises made and what has been achieved in that government.

From 7 August 2022, Gustavo Petro, the first declared left-wing president in its history, is in charge of Colombia.

His arrival was loaded with several promises when it was all about change; This is how he expressed it in the campaign in which he won against the Colombian right and the considered candidates from the center.

These promises were associated with various social transformations, subsidies for single mothers, guaranteeing employment and a decent income for the unemployed, which became part of his campaign banners.

Among the other protagonists of Gustavo Petro’s speech were reforms, changing the country to a controlled public health system, redoing the pension system and strengthening access to higher education.

However, few of those promises were the banner of the campaign, as the political analyst Jaime Honorio González showed through the aforementioned portal.

According to the analysis made for CNN, Gustavo Petro’s government has disappointed several sectors; However, it was expected of his management, in line with his political ideology.

“Petro was not surprised because he did what he promised he would try to do: the reforms, the changes in the economic, political and social structure of the country to impose his leftist vision. That has to be paid for.”said Honorio González.

He also said that the president “He didn’t get to do almost anything he wanted to do. He made a pension reform that was very different from what it was, and the other reforms have not passed. “It’s not even 20% of what he promised his voters.”

Another aspect that was reviewed in this analysis was the corruption scandals, the controversy about a possible Assembly and his particular style of control.

Regarding the latter, a comparison was made between what was Petro’s Presidency and his Mayor’s Office in the city of Bogotáa position considered the second most important in the country for some analysts.

According to the analysis of Honorio González, the way the country was run and the way it was led in the nation’s capital were similar, where there was constant confrontation with their officials, permanent provocation of adversaries and more speeches than realization.

“He uses polarization to justify his bad results. Because of Petro’s management, “I don’t think that in 2026 the left will have enough opportunity to continue in power.”the analyst told CNN.

Something that also stood out in his way of control is the “total peace” policy, where there is a dialogue with some groups outside the law, among them, the ELN and some dissidents of the FARC.

For the analyst Jaime Arango, “there is no planning for these processes, and what is happening is that these groups are becoming stronger. “Drug trafficking is on the rise, the military forces are distracted by several cease-fires without clear rules, and the civilian population is unprotected.”

Regarding corruption scandals, the moles of the administration stand out, such as what happened with the National Disaster Risk Management Unit – UNGRD – where contracts were directed in favor of the congressmen and officials related to Petro close to 1.4 billion pesos.

Also, there are the recurring questions of some members of his cabinet, such as Minister Ricardo Bonilla, ambassador and former senator Armando Benedetti and who was considered Gustavo Petro’s right-hand woman, Laura Sarabia.

This meant that even the president has to come out to apologize for these types of scandals, as was his speech at the opening of the Congress sessions on July 20.

“I want to start these words basically by asking for forgiveness from you as the representatives of the people, and from the people of Colombia for what happened in the UNGRD”said the president at the time.

The other mole of this administration is the ongoing controversy about a Joint Assembly, although some members of the National Government such as the Minister of the Interior, Juan Fernando Cristo, deny that this possibility is remote, their opponents accuse that this possibility close. , referring to the fact that the president is already campaigning for the 2026 elections.

So far, Gustavo Petro’s term of office is barely halfway over, where it is he has only 34.6 percent approval, according to an Invamer poll.

It is hoped, for the rest, that the president of Colombia can change the attitude on issues of national concern such as access to health, security and corruption in the country, issues which, according to the same survey, are the most worrying. the inhabitants of Colombia.
