Reach the top as both a player and a coach
Coach Kim Pang-gon, who led Pro Football K League 1 Ulsan HD to their third consecutive victory, expressed his gratitude to everyone at the club.
Ulsan won 2-1 in the Hana Bank K League 1 2024 Final A round 36 home game against Gangwon FC held at Ulsan Sports Complex at 7:30 pm on the 1st.
With this win, Ulsan became the third team in K-League history to record three consecutive losses, following Seongnam Ilhwa (now Seongnam FC) and Jeonbuk Hyundai. The club’s fifth win.
Coach Kim Pang-gon became the first Ulsan club to win a championship as both a player and a coach.
He helped the team win its first regular league title as a player in 1996, and became the coach who led the team to its fifth overall championship.
Coach Kim said in a press conference after the game, “I am grateful to our players for their good performance. Because they are players with a lot of experience, they showed calmness and determination today. “Congratulations,” he said.
Regarding the first record he wrote, he said, “I am quite honored. I have been a leader for 26 years, and I think I started on the 10th floor underground. I wanted this opportunity (to play a team like Ulsan). “But I didn’t come, so I’m grateful that Ulsan invited me,” he said. “I felt pressured to win, but I’m glad I did it.” “Thank you to the players, coaches, support staff and everyone at the club,” he said.
Coach Kim filled the vacancy left by Coach Hong Myung-bo when he took the helm of the Korean men’s soccer team. Managing a team that is competing for the championship in the middle of the season is bound to be a burden.
Coach Kim said, “When I first came, I think there was about a 5-point gap with the leader, but it was difficult to overturn that and maintain the lead.” “The pressure of winning was great, and going through the ACL at the same time was difficult,” he said.
He continued, “I don’t think he demonstrated any special leadership (in taking charge of the team and stabilizing it in the interim). When I arrived, I realized that the previous coach had created a good team. “I didn’t have to touch anything, but it was difficult to decide to show my own style,” he said. “I think the players were confused during the process, but I think they became more confident and interested as time went by.”
Although history has been rewritten, Ulsan is looking higher. Coach Kim emphasized the need to prepare for the FIFA Club World Cup to be held next summer.
He said, “Participating in the Club World Cup was a big motivation for joining this team,” but added, “I think things like mercenary quotas in the K-League are less prepared than in other leagues. We need to think about whether we have the strength to participate in the Club World Cup. I think you should be ready (to go out) rather than excited. “I think we need to prepare well for winter,” he pointed out.
