A few months ago coal production in India was insufficient. Coal supply was also a problem. Due to this, India’s electricity generation was affected and severe electricity shortage was created. However, the Government of India has taken various initiatives and has set targets to increase coal production and is working accordingly. Production has been increasing for the last two to three months and is expected to increase further in the coming months. India’s coal production in 2021-22 was 778.19 million tonnes. This is an increase of 8.67 percent compared to 2020-21. For the current financial year, 785.24 million tonnes of coal has been produced till February. This is an increase of 15.14 percent compared to the same period in the previous financial year.

The production target for this year is set at 911 million tonnes. However, it is expected to reach 1012 tonnes. The government is taking various measures to reduce India’s coal imports and increase domestic production. Ministry of Coal is also conducting frequent inspections regarding coal production.

A single window clearance platform has been established to speed up the process of commissioning coal mines. Commercial bidding is done on revenue sharing basis. Coal India is implementing modern technologies to increase production. Coal India is taking steps to carry out mining operations wherever there is an opportunity.

Attempts are also being made to resume production in abandoned mines. Many more such activities are underway. Due to this, India’s coal import has been decreasing in the last 4 years. India’s total coal import in 2018-19 was 235.35 million tonnes. In the period up to December of this financial year, coal import is 186.06 tonnes.

Union Coal Minister Bralhad Joshi has given these details in his written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
