DISTRIBUTION – As the United Kingdom shut down its last coal-fired power plant on Monday, like more than a third of OECD countries before it, the world has yet to switch to fossil fuel, the world’s largest gas emitter.

United Kingdom says “farewell” on coal. More than 140 years after the opening in the heart of London of the world’s first electricity plant, the seat of the Industrial Revolution turns a page in its history by closing, on Monday, the Ratcliffe- on-Soar, the last to use coal in the UK. Now the country becomes the first member of the G7 (which also includes Italy, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the United States) to take this step.

If the scene that arrived across the channel was the ultimate symbol, the world is far from having turned its back on coal. The IPCC climate experts are however clear: if we want to respect the Paris agreement and limit global warming to 2°C (or even if possible to 1.5°C), the world must be completely coal-free by 2050 in new, and backward uses dead with carbon dioxide handling and storage procedures.
