Coca Cola starts from Marcianise to launch an eco-sustainable packaging

Coca-Cola introduces on the Italian market the KeelClip ™ technology, an innovative packaging system, in FSC paper from a responsible supply chain and 100 percent recyclable, which allows to completely eliminate the plastic wrapping from the multiple packs of cans, reducing by 50 % CO2 emissions and saving 450 tons of plastic per year. The Marcianise plant is the first in Italy to have started production thanks to an investment of 3 million euros, a choice that underlines its strategic role for Coca-Cola.

Already today all the plastic, glass and aluminum packaging used are completely recyclable and partly already made of recycled material, with KeelClip ™ the company is also focusing on the so-called secondary packaging, the one not in direct contact with the product. It is one of the most technologically advanced solutions in the management of multiple packs, a system consisting of a paper top that hooks onto the cans and a central unit that stabilizes the pack.

In recent years, over 50 million euros have been invested in the Marcianise plant in innovation and sustainability, KeelClip ™ is just the latest in a series of long-term projects that have seen the plant become an increasingly important reality in Southern Italy explains Ciro Grieco, Plant Manager of Coca-Cola HBC Italia in Marcianise. We want to be an example of how we can help create an increasingly circular economy, thanks to an increasing amount of recycled plastic in packaging and the reduction of raw materials in packaging.

Inaugurated in 1974, the Marcianise plant is the largest production site of the company in Southern Italy with 3 production lines and over 210,000,000 liters produced annually between Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and FUZETEA in glass, PET and can formats. The main investments in recent years have involved the installation of a high-speed line of 120,000 cans per hour, the activation of a photovoltaic system and the installation of new state-of-the-art machinery for direct blowing of bottles. The plant also has a cogeneration plant, inaugurated in 2016, to produce energy, heat and chilled water, which allows a reduction in emissions and an increase in energy efficiency.
