“Cocaine is a powerful central nervous system stimulant and one of the most addictive and dangerous drugs”as warned by the National Plan on Drugs.

Despite this, there are several socially widespread myths that tend to make the consumption of this drug less serious. Also highlighted purported benefits related to sexual pleasure and easy to make friends and social relationships, but the reality is quite different and much harsher, harmful to health and sometimes dramatic.

From the National Plan on Drugs they point to six kind myths about cocaine use and six very different realities.

Myth 1: Cocaine gives you a lot of power

1) Cocaine gets you going. The reality, according to the government’s team of anti-drug experts, is that “cocaine has a temporary stimulating effect (it lasts between 30 and 60 minutes) after which there is an intense comedown that causes tiredness, decay and depression”.

Myth 2: Improve relationships because you disinhibit

2) Improve relationships with others as it helps to disinhibit. The reality, on the contrary, is that “the abusive use of cocaine produces irritability and aggressiveness, therefore the social relations of the consumer deteriorate”.

Myth 3: Sex is more pleasurable

3) Sex under the influence of cocaine is more satisfying. The reality, however, is that regular cocaine use decreases sexual desire and causes “Erection and ejaculation problems in menbeing able to produce impotence and infertility”, warn the experts of the National Plan on Drugs on their website.

Myth 4: Cocaine is less dangerous than other drugs

4) Cocaine is a less dangerous drug than other substances. The reality is quite different. “The consequences it produces on the physical and psychological health of its consumers are very serious.” Also, along with heroin, it is the main cause of numerous criminal and violent acts.

Myth 5: Nothing happens if you consume on weekends

5) Nothing happens if it is only consumed on weekends. The reality, also in the case of this myth, is very different. “Consuming every weekend means consuming more than 100 days a year, without counting the vacation periods in which it is also consumed, which entails a obvious risk“, emphasize the anti-drug experts. On the other hand, it must be taken into account that the effects of the weekend are prolonged and affect the following days.

Myth 6: Cocaine is easy to control

6) Its use is easy to control. The reality is that it is “one of the drugs with the greatest capacity to generate addiction” as demonstrated in the growing number of people who go to the emergency room or to treatment for problems related to their consumption.

Heart rate and brain risks

Cocaine use causes the body to increased heart rate and blood pressureas well as decreased coronary blood flow and increased oxygen demand, among other effects, according to a joint study by the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), the Basque Institute of Legal Medicine and the Network Biomedical Research Center of Mental Health.

Furthermore, according to Science Alert, cocaine is one of the most addictive substances known to humans. It interferes with the brain’s reward pathways, forcing its cells to continue pumping out pleasurable signals until the drug wears off. This causes addicts’ brains age at an accelerated rate.
