Bolivia Braces for Election Disruption as Fuel Shortages Spark Protests
A deepening fuel crisis in Bolivia is threatening to derail the upcoming presidential runoff election, as transporters in Cochabamba block key roadways in protest. The demonstrations, which began Tuesday, highlight a recurring problem of fuel scarcity and raise concerns about the stability of the nation’s economy and political process just five days before voters head to the polls.
Cochabamba Transporters Halt traffic
The Special federation of Free Transportation of Cochabamba initiated the roadblocks, effectively paralyzing transportation networks throughout the department. Protesters have used vehicles, branches, and even stones to obstruct routes, including a key sector near the municipality of Tarata, approximately 30 kilometers from Cochabamba city, according to reports from EFE.
A spokesperson for the protesting drivers read a manifesto outlining their grievances, stating the action is a direct response to the “shortage of diesel and gasoline” and the “poor quality of fuel” currently available, which they claim is causing damage to their vehicles. Beyond fuel concerns, the demonstrators are also protesting the lack of investment in road maintenance and demanding broader options for vehicle insurance. Currently, all drivers are required to utilize the state-owned Univida for insurance coverage.
“We seek to leave as a precedent for future authorities that the sector will not allow this type of abuse anymore,” the manifesto stated, with a warning of further action if demands are not met.
