The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) announced in its last Fortnightly Report on Therapeutic Expansion that it authorized 102 new health supplies in the categories of medicines, medical devices and clinical trials. All are already within the reach of patients and health professionals.

What are the functions of Cofepris?

In this sense, this Commission performs more functions than many think. Within the extensive list are making constant reviews of all health care establishments. At the same time, it is also in charge of granting or denying permits to all drugs found in our country.

Since its creation in 2001, it has positioned itself as the highest governing body in matters of health control and regulation in all of Mexico.

To understand its importance, Cofepris regulates 44 cents of each peso spent by households in Mexico. The figure is obtained through three sectors that it regulates: food, beverages and tobacco; health care articles; and personal care items.

Cofepris authorizes new medicines

through the Health Authorization Commission (CAS), Cofepris fully complies to guarantee access to health supplies. All were subjected to a strict review and an opinion that verifies their safety, quality and efficacy, necessary to obtain the sanitary registry.

In it Fortnightly Report on Cofepris Therapeutic Expansion, corresponding to the first fortnight of May, reports the authorization of 11 new medicines. Among them, tremelimumab stands out, a biotechnological product for the treatment of lung cancer, anaplastic lymphoma and hepatocellular carcinoma, and betamethasone/calcipotriol, which is a pharmachemical product for the treatment of plaque psoriasis.

Also, it approved the health registration of 83 new medical devices, of which 21 are for medical care. These include decellularized allograft and ankle fixation implant systems, as well as soft tissue biopsy needles; 44 for the diagnosis of conditions such as cancer, diabetes, pneumonia, enteritis, cholera, chikungunya, herpes, celiac disease, and heart failure, among others, and 18 medical equipment, including infusion pumps, surgical instruments, and surgical microscopes.

Eight new clinical trials were also authorized. Notable on the list is a phase I trial on an antibody for the treatment of cancer and a phase II trial to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The regulation carried out by the health authority on medicines, medical devices and clinical trials, as well as transparency in the exercise of reporting, guarantee access to safe, effective and quality health supplies.
