Pfizer‘s updated vaccine against the new strain of COVID-19 can now be sold in Mexico after obtaining approval from the Federal Commission for the Protection against Health Risks (Cofepris).
“Cofepris gave the go-ahead to market the updated COVID-19 vaccine in Mexico. This new version was unanimously chosen and recommended for the JN.1 lineage,” Pfizer reported in a statement this Friday, October 18.
According to him FDA Advisory Committee on Vaccines and Related Biological Products from the United States, the JN.1 variant has about of 80 mutations and it is the one that is currently generating new cases of coronavirus in Mexico and other parts of the world.
In this regard, Pfizer pointed out that the approval in Mexico by Cofepris occurs at an opportune time because an increase in the number of positive cases has been reported in 85 countries.
“With this authorization, the vaccine arrives at the right time considering that the Global Influenza Surveillance and Response System (GISRS) has recorded an increase in COVID cases from 7.4 to 13 percent in 85 countries,” highlighted the American pharmaceutical company.
How many cases of the JN.1 variant of COVID-19 have been recorded in Mexico?
In the case of Mexico, Pfizer points out that the Ministry of Health has reported 13,807 positive cases of COVID-19 of the JN.1 variant, which is why it reiterated the importance of the approval of the updated vaccine.
“We are very proud of this new authorization that allows us to contribute to the well-being of Mexicans,” said Juan Luis Morell, general director of Pfizer Mexico.
This week, the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) reported that it is possible to get vaccinated against COVID and influenza at the same time and noted that people of almost all ages, especially those who are physically vulnerable, They must apply a dose year after year to stay updated and prevent new virus variants.
