The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) and the Mexico City Ministry of Health (Sedesa) came together to make history. It is about the installation of first Institutional Pharmacovigilance Center specialized in the health of the LGBTTTIQAP+ community. She will operate in the Condesa de Cuauhtémoc and Iztapalapa Specialized Clinic, as well as in the Comprehensive Health Unit for Trans Persons (USIPT).
Its duties?
This center will strengthen the monitoring of medications for patients receiving hormonal therapies, gender affirmation and treatments against sexually transmitted diseases, such as HIV. In addition, managing the risks found in patients treated in specialized clinics and conducting research to improve the safety of medications.
The event was headed by the federal commissioner, Alejandro Svarch Perez, who highlighted the importance of this new center. He said that it is the only one of its kind in Latin America, so it is also a broad recognition of the work carried out by health specialists who work in the units of attention to the LGBTTTIQAP+ community.
“Today we give color to health regulation, a historical debt that can only be repaid through the consolidation of a rights health agenda that guarantees the protection and health of all, all as a priority of our institution.”
He recalled that, for many years, pharmacovigilance was a limited process, mainly oriented to the use of information on adverse reactions, mainly provided by the company itself. pharmaceutical industry. Which, added to the conflicts of interest and the lack of approach to patients, was one more way of making communities of diversity invisible, for which reason the transformation of the health system is a priority responsibility for Cofepris.
Medical information without discrimination
For her part, the Secretary of Health of Mexico City, Olive Lopez Arellanorecalled that two years ago, Cofepris proposed the installation of a work table to carry out regulatory actions and risk reduction in favor of the most vulnerable populations.
Since then he has continued to accompany the specialized clinics Condesa, Condesa Iztapalapa and the USIPTwhich made it possible to establish a more direct relationship with users, expand the sanitary registries to new medicines and carry out actions to combat the irregular sale of medicines:
“The team of chemists and pharmacists that joined these care centers have received training and updates from Cofepris, which led to the establishment of permanent and accurate communication channels with medical areas and health teams, and established a relationship Permanent contact with the user population of the pharmacies of the three centers to provide information on the use of drugs, detect adverse reactions, as well as assess risks and specific needs of each person, positioning the pharmacy as what it is, a vital service for the health”.
The community coordinator of the USIPT, Oyuki Martinez Colinindicated that the Institutional Center for Pharmacovigilance specialized in the health of the LGBTTTIQAP+ community will carry out monitoring actions with commitment and empathy.
“This center represents a fundamental impulse to know the adverse reactions of the treatments directed especially to this community. It generates friendly, safe and stigma-free research to facilitate scientific progress in the study of ills that affect our populations. Although the manufacture and distribution of medicines is important, so are the diagnostic methods, the characteristics of the patients, their clinical history, their cultural, economic and social conditions”.
