The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) is one of the most important authorities in our country and for its constant work it obtained an important award. Since its creation in 2001, it was established as a decentralized administrative body of the Ministry of Health (SSa) with technical, administrative and operational autonomy. Its main task is to be the governing body in the field of health control and regulation throughout the country.

To understand its importance, Cofepris regulates 44 cents of each peso spent by households in Mexico. The figure is obtained through three sectors that it regulates: food, beverages and tobacco; health care articles; and personal care items.

As part of the novelties, the Cofepris Commission for Analytical Control and Expansion of Coverage (CCAyAC) received the Recognition of the Commitment to Accreditation 2023, which is granted by the Mexican Accreditation Entity (EMA).

This award was given within the framework of the International Accreditation Day. It is a global initiative established jointly by the International Accreditation Forum (IAF) and the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC) to raise awareness of the importance of related activities. with accreditation.

The Commissioner for Analytical Control and Expansion of Coverage, Armida Zúñiga Estrada, received recognition from the EMA in the category Test Laboratories. The reason was due to the compliance of this commission with the internationally recognized norms to develop analytical activities.

“Several factors are taken into account, such as the time it takes to be accredited and CCAyAC has been accredited since 1992, before the EMA existed. In the last audits we have obtained as a result “zero non-conformity”, that is to say, that we have full compliance with the regulations on the matter.

Cofepris’ analytical work to comply with international standards is based on its quality management system.

“It is proof that we have the appropriate equipment and technology, with preventive and corrective maintenance programs for equipment and instruments. Personnel with the appropriate profile, the required competence and the experience to carry out the different analytical processes work in the laboratory”.

The accreditations guarantee that the analysis results are reliable and timely to make decisions that allow protecting the health of the population and that they are accepted anywhere in the world with the highest level of confidence.
