According to the WHO, one in eight people in the world suffers from a mental disorder.
The project presented by Cofepris for psychiatric hospitals not only focuses on mental health but also on human rights.
The new model seeks to guarantee access to safe, effective and quality health supplies.

Mental health is often ignored by people but also by institutions. To prevent this from happening, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) announced the project of a new care model for all psychiatric hospitals in the country.

Taking care of mental health and respecting human rights

The project is named Cofepris Badge and seeks to guarantee the provision of hospital services with high quality standards adhering to current health regulations in psychiatric hospitals, with the support of federal and state authorities, always prioritizing a human rights perspective.

In this regard, the head of the Commission, Alejandro Svarch Pérez, reported that when developing this project, the cooperative approach of health regulation was proposed to guarantee that the supplies used in patient care meet quality, safety and efficacy standards. .

For his part, the owner of the National Commission on Mental Health and Addictions (Conasama)Juan Manuel Quijada Gaytán, pointed out the importance of this project because historically psychiatric hospitals were relegated from the Health sector.

“Today is different. Within the framework of the reforms to the General Health Law in the area of mental health, we promote the strengthening of processes, the safety of supplies and, of course, the quality of care. We demonstrate with facts that mental health in Mexico is now a priority.”

He pointed out that with the creation of CONASAMA, the rectory is strengthened and the policy on continuous improvement is dictated in the mental health care units of the three levels of care in the states, including psychiatric hospitals.

Bases of the new model of psychiatric hospitals proposed by Cofepris

The coordinator of the Federal Health SystemCarlos Aguilar Acosta, explained that this project is focused on strengthening psychiatric hospitals throughout the country through four main axes:

Accompaniment of strategic areas in the provision of psychiatric services. Permanent installation of a desk for attention to regulatory needs.
