Man files complaint against jewelry shop for overcharging

Coimbatore: A man named Gopi, residing in Parambikulam near Palakkad, has filed a complaint against a jewelry shop in Gandhipuram for overcharging on a ring he purchased. The incident took place on Dec. 31, 2020, when Gopi bought a ring studded with stones weighing one gram and 50 ml from the shop. He paid a total of Rs 7,000, including damages, wages, and taxes.

At the time of purchase, the price of one gram of gold was Rs 4,508, but it was later revealed that 44 percent of the amount was charged in addition to the value of the gold purchased.

In response to the complaint, Gopi has filed a case in the Consumer Grievance Commission in Coimbatore, seeking compensation for the price of the gold and the weight of the stones embedded in the jewelry.

Commission Chairman Dhangvel stated, “Since it has been proved that the respondent has provided deficient service, the petitioner should be given 10,000 rupees as compensation for emotional distress and 5,000 rupees as legal expenses.”

The case is ongoing, and Gopi is hopeful for a fair resolution in his favor. The incident serves as a reminder for consumers to be vigilant about overcharging and seek redressal through proper channels when such issues arise.
