The latest sociological survey for the presidential elections in Romania at the end of the year shows that Prime Minister Marcel Călăcu and the leader of the nationalist party “Alliance for the Unification of Romanians” (AUR) George Simion will reach the second round of the elections for the head of state, reports in “Adeverul”.

The survey by the Sochiopol agency, carried out between August 26 and September 3, shows that the leader of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Prime Minister Marcel Cholaku ranked first in the attitudes of the electorate with 26 percent. His main opponent is AUR leader George Simion with 19 percent, which outlines a possible second round between the two, writes BTA.

The presidential elections in Romania are scheduled for November 24 (first round) and December 8 (second round), and the parliamentary elections will take place on December 1.

In third and fourth place, with an equal result of 14 percent, the Sociopol poll places the resigned NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Joana and the leader of the opposition party “Union for the Salvation of Romania” Elena Lasconi.

Joanna has not yet announced an official candidacy for the presidency of Romania, but a number of polls have pointed to him as the favorite for the post.

The leader of the National-Liberal Party Nikolae Chuka was placed in fifth place in the poll with 10 percent of the potential votes. The owner of the Sochiopol agency, Mirel Palada, commented on his Facebook page that Chuka has no chance for a second round of the presidential elections.

Nationalist SOS Romania party candidate Diana Soshoaca garnered 9 percent of potential votes in the poll, and independent candidate Cristian Diaconescu 7 percent, the survey showed.

The survey was conducted through telephone interviews with 1,005 respondents and is representative of Romania. The margin of error at the 95 percent confidence level is +/- 3.2 percent.
