Latvia Braces for Deep Freeze: Temperatures Plummet Below -20°C

A severe cold snap is gripping Latvia, with temperatures forecast to fall dramatically Wednesday night and Thursday morning, plunging to below -20°C in many central and eastern regions. Residents are being urged to prepare for hazardous conditions as the country experiences some of its coldest weather in recent years.

Widespread Sub-Zero Temperatures Expected

Forecasters predict a frigid night across much of Latvia. While precipitation is not anticipated, conditions will be challenging. Skies will initially be clear, gradually becoming overcast starting from the north. Fog,mist, and frost are expected to develop in several areas, reducing visibility and creating slippery surfaces.

The lowest temperatures overnight are expected to range from -20°C to -15°C across most of the country. However, areas with prolonged clear skies could see temperatures dip as low as -25°C. A reprieve from the extreme cold will be found in Kurzeme and parts of Northern Vidzeme, where temperatures will remain between -13°C and -8°C.

During the day, intermittent sunshine is expected, but light snowfall is possible in some parts of Vidzeme. A slow easterly wind will accompany the cold temperatures. Daytime highs will range from -8°C to -3°C,with some southern regions potentially reaching -12°C.

Did you know? – Latvia’s lowest recorded temperature was -36.1°C, registered in Daugavpils in 1940. While current temperatures aren’t reaching that extreme, they represent a significant cold wave for the region.

Conditions in Rīga

The capital city, Rīga, is expected to avoid precipitation, with predominantly clear skies. However, residents should anticipate fog and frost both overnight and in the morning. The minimum temperature in Rīga is forecast to be around -17°C, with even colder temperatures – down to -22°C – possible in the suburbs.

Record Lows Recorded

The severity of the cold is underscored by a new record low for this winter. This morning, a temperature of -24.5°C was recorded in Daugavpils, marking the coldest reading in Latvia in the past two years. This level of cold has not been seen as early January 2024, highlighting the unusual intensity of the current weather system, especially considering last winter’s comparatively mild conditions.

Pro tip – To prevent pipes from freezing, allow a slow drip of cold water to run overnight.Insulating exposed pipes can also provide extra protection during extreme cold.

.

The current conditions demand vigilance and preparedness from residents across Latvia as the region navigates this intense period of cold.

Why is this happening? A strong high-pressure system over Eastern Europe is drawing in cold air from the Arctic, resulting in the current deep freeze. The clear skies exacerbate the cooling effect, allowing heat to radiate away from the surface.

Who is affected? The entire country of Latvia is experiencing the cold snap, but central and eastern regions, including Daugavpils, are facing the most extreme temperatures. Residents of Rīga are experiencing significantly colder temperatures than usual, with a risk of frost and fog.

What is the impact? The cold is creating hazardous conditions, including slippery roads due to frost and ice, and a risk of hypothermia. Infrastructure is also at risk, with potential for frozen pipes and disruptions to transportation.

How did it end? While the immediate forecast calls for continued cold through Thursday, forecasters predict a gradual warming trend beginning Friday, with temperatures expected to rise above freezing by the weekend. The high-pressure system is expected to weaken, allowing milder air to move in from the west.
