“The Umbria Region has always had a great culture in the field of screening. During the pandemic we managed to maintain a high number of oncological screenings, obviously not at the levels of 2019, but over time we managed to recover many of them and we were the best Region at a national level in terms of prevention programs”. “We have always carefully managed local home care – continues Coletto – due to the high presence of elderly patients who have less use of hospital, the better, for many reasons. First of all, if hospitalization lasts for more than a week, our elderly are susceptible to hospital infections. Therefore, having a local culture, we were able to manage screening across the districts with the operators in charge and encouraging the prevention program which remains a fundamental drug, costs zero but gives great results”.
The same “strategy was used for vaccination against influenza – Coletto remarks – We managed to vaccinate around 7 out of 10 over 65s against influenza to avoid unnecessary hospitalizations which would also be inappropriate but above all to avoid unnecessary influences which can turn into bronchopneumonia or other respiratory pathologies. We achieved this objective through the Districts, all healthcare areas, pharmacies, but also through the work of the local press, television and newspapers, which helped us in the main aim, to encourage the vaccination campaign”.
