“Saturday Night Live’s” Colin Jost and Michael Che delight fans with their holiday tradition

The holiday season is a time for traditions, and for “Saturday Night Live’s” “Weekend Update” co-anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che, that tradition involves writing jokes for each other to tell. It’s a gift that keeps on giving, and on Saturday night, Che upped the ante by inviting a woman he introduced as Black poet/activist Hattie Davis to join them on set.

Jost seemed to know that things were not going to go well for him, and he was right. He stumbled through his first joke about geneticists planning to bring back the dodo and reintroduce it to Africa, only to have a photo of Barack Obama flash on the screen. “The woman’s an activist, Colin,” Che responded, shaking his head.

Jost then announced that alcohol was now being served in movie theaters in New York, and joked that it was the only thing that allowed him to enjoy his wife Scarlett Johansson’s “little art movies.” He then added insult to injury by saying, “I love all of your movies. And if you ask me, you’re an even better Black Widow than Coretta Scott King.”

While Jost may not have known they’d have a guest on the set with them, Che didn’t get off so easily. Che gave his review of the acting in “MJ the Musical” – the Broadway show about the life of Michael Jackson – saying it was “the same as MJ’s trial: Michael is amazing, but the kids aren’t believable at all.”

Che then attempted to end the segment on a positive note, saying, “Especially with all the turmoil in the Middle East right now. So I want to say, from the bottom of my heart—whether you’re Jewish or Muslim—y’all need Jesus.”

The holiday season may be a time for traditions, and for “Saturday Night Live” fans, the tradition of Jost and Che’s hilarious banter on “Weekend Update” is definitely one to look forward to every year.
