Silvio Berlusconi died on Monday at the age of 86. The one who has been three times Prime Minister in Italy was also patron of an audiovisual empire, Mediaset, which notably holds the main TV channel private, Canale 5. And for the presenters of the morning, the announcement of the death of Il Cavaliere was difficult to make, relays the Huffington Post.

Federica Panicucci began by explaining: “It was the worst thing we could do today, for us at Mediaset”, then announcing, in a broken voice: “Silvio Berlusconi is dead”.

Unable to continue

A statement followed by a moment of hesitation, during which the host could not say anything. In tears, she then asked her colleague, Francesco Vecchi, to continue. “I understand, and I believe that is the case for all those who work here” began by explaining the latter, also moved.

The two presenters attempted to continue their work, in vain. They failed to initiate a duplex with a journalist, apologizing and explaining that they had just heard the news. Finally Federica Panicucci greeted her colleague and then the spectators, before leaving the set. A special edition of the channel’s newscast was then launched.

Wednesday funeral

Treated at San Raffaele Hospital in Milan for leukemia, Silvio Berlusconi entered it last Friday. Shortly after his death was announced, dozens of people gathered outside the hospital as tributes poured in fromItaly and from abroad. A state funeral will be held Wednesday at the majestic Cathedral of Milan.
