How can the Heubach outdoor pool be renovated and thus be preserved in the long term? Perhaps a collection of donations or “crowdfunding” can do its part, the city also thinks. Photo: me © me

Could companies and citizens from Heubach or even residents of the neighboring communities participate in the renovation of the outdoor pool? That’s what the mayor and the association say about it.

Heubach

The Heubach outdoor pool, built in 1936, is in need of renovation. Because the federal government did not set any funds for a subsidy program, the municipal councils had to remove it from the list this year. There is still a need for action – especially with the old technology. This could be observed this summer when the pool had to be closed for a short time due to a technical fault.

Klaus Schlumpberger, a former lifeguard and regular guest at the local council’s citizens’ questioning hours, brought several questions with him at the most recent meeting. Wouldn’t the city rather put the millions planned for the renovation of the castle into the outdoor pool? Couldn’t the surrounding communities contribute “with a significant amount” to the renovation, after all their citizens are also “beneficiaries” of the outdoor pool? And finally: whether local companies and banks could contribute to the maintenance of the outdoor pool with interest-free loans or donations?

Mayor Alemazung rejected the first question. The castle renovation is already on the way. The city was also badly affected by the recent forced closure of the outdoor pool. For technical reasons, the number of bathers is currently reduced to 1,500 per day, which means that even season ticket holders have to be sent home on some days. “We hope we can keep the pool in good condition until the end of the season and then renovate the technical area in winter for the 2024 season,” said Alemazung. The building committee is to issue a planning contract to an engineering office next Wednesday. Goal: an economical partial renovation of the technology. He could well imagine setting up a donation account here. “I think many are willing to support the outdoor pool,” says the mayor, who wants to coordinate closely with the outdoor pool’s development association.

That’s what the association wants

When asked, Carmen Grau, the chairwoman of the association for the promotion of the Heubach outdoor pool, confirms that what Klaus Schlumpberger mentioned is exactly what the association wants to do. “It’s great that Mr. Schlumpberger brought this up,” says Carmen Grau and reports that there has already been support from sponsors for the outdoor pool recently. It was about new chairs for the terrace. Here, the association played a mediating role between the city and companies willing to sponsor. It was possible to win companies as sponsors, with this support then going directly to the city to purchase the new chairs. 6,700 euros were raised for the white steel chairs, ten each from the Hirschbrauerei, the Mühlhäuser bakery and confectionery, the Kreissparkasse, the Raiffeisenbank, Probas Plating and the Emag company. The new chairs are now on their way and should arrive in Heubach in the coming days. Some of the old tables have already been sandblasted and recoated at the suggestion of the association and with funds from the city, i.e. “sustainably renovated”, as Carmen Grau emphasizes. On his own initiative, Bernd Richter from the company lighting technologies is in the process of producing signs with the respective names of the chair sponsors. Carmen Grau can very well imagine starting a fundraiser for other areas of the outdoor pool, for example for the purchase of a new pump. This could be “imaginarily broken down into parts” in order to then have them sponsored by different companies. This is still a bit immature, but should be addressed after the chairs have been received. Even with small amounts, a lot can be achieved. “Something like this would also be possible for the Heubach outdoor pool,” Carmen Grau is convinced. She definitely thinks that there is a willingness for this in the population and in companies. Not least because an outdoor pool could be a location argument for Heubach, for example when recruiting skilled workers.

Lots of affection for the outdoor pool

“There was a lot of affection for the outdoor pool,” reports Carmen Grau of her experiences, also from people from the neighboring communities. “There’s even the Mögglinger side in the outdoor pool on the right-hand side behind the terrace,” she says and laughs. She is confident that people could be won over to donate to the outdoor pool. They want to tackle that after the new chairs have been assembled. “We at the club are totally ready to support that and I’m not so unoptimistic that we can achieve something there.”

That’s what the neighboring mayors say

The editors have taken up the questions raised by Klaus Schlumpberger. The mayors of the VG municipalities are reluctant to participate financially. “So far, I have not received any such request from the city of Heubach,” says Bartholomäs Schultes Thomas Kuhn. Jürgen Stempfle from Böbingen writes that he does not want to comment on an individual opinion from the citizens’ question time because he does not know the ideas of the municipal council and the city administration. “It’s different when the city of Heubach sends an official request to the municipality of Böbingen. Then we will be happy to take a stand on request,” says Stempfle. Irmgard Sehner, deputy mayor of Mögglingen, says that she is not aware of any comparable cases where cities expect users to share the costs for their cultural offerings. “I do not yet know whether the city of Heubach would expect this. If that were the case – it would certainly be a difficult subject,” says Irmgard Sehner. ⋌ dav
