As the number of college students looking for part-time jobs during vacation increases, it is predicted that competition for part-time jobs this winter will be fierce. Additionally, college students appeared to relatively prefer part-time jobs at cafes or government offices.
According to the job search portal Alba Heaven on the 23rd, in a recent survey of 694 college students who were planning to work part-time this winter, 87.2% of respondents answered, ‘I plan to look for a new part-time job.’ The remaining 12.8% said, ‘I will continue my current part-time job.’
There were many college students who were ‘N-jobbers’ (people with multiple jobs) who would work two or more part-time jobs at once. Among the respondents (605 people) who said they were looking for a new part-time job, 24.1% said they would look for an additional part-time job even though they were already working part-time. 11.6% of respondents said they were not currently working part-time, but were looking for two or more new part-time jobs.
Young people looking for part-time jobs also predicted that finding part-time jobs this winter would not be smooth. When we asked 323 people who had looked for a part-time job last winter how difficult it would be to find a job during this winter vacation, 74.3% of respondents responded that it would be more difficult than last year. The most common reason (multiple responses) was ‘because the number of part-time job seekers is expected to increase’ at 48.3%. This was followed by ‘because there don’t seem to be many job openings that meet the desired conditions’ (36.3%) and ‘because there seems to be a lot of applicants for popular part-time positions’ (34.6%).
When all respondents were asked why they wanted to work part-time during this winter vacation (multiple responses), most (80.7%) answered ‘to earn pocket money or living expenses.’ There were also significant responses such as ‘to save a lump sum for tuition or travel expenses’ (39.9%) and ‘because I need additional income due to high inflation and the burden of expenses’ (22.5%).
College students most frequently chose ‘cafes and desserts’ (29.1%) and ‘government offices’ (21.8%) as the part-time jobs they would like to do during this winter vacation. In addition, as factors considered important when looking for a job (multiple responses), ‘wage level such as minimum wage and additional allowances’ (51.6%) and ‘commuting distance close to living radius’ (50.7%) were selected.
An official from Alba Heaven said, “College students who are on winter break have started making plans for part-time jobs in earnest, but it seems that it will not be easier to find part-time jobs than in previous years.” Alba Heaven will operate the ‘Winter Vacation Part-time Job Recruitment Hall’ until February next year and provide a collection of part-time job recruitment notices specialized for winter.
