“The parties to the conflict must protect the life and dignity of people who do not participate or who have ceased to participate in hostilities and must treat them with humanity in all circumstances. In this context, we salute the humanitarian gesture of the armed group in surrendering to this person so that he can be reunited with his family,” said Kian Abbassian, head of the ICRC sub-delegation for the south-west of the country.

The man was in adequate health conditions and was transferred by the ICRC to another area to be reunited with his loved ones.

“In the releases we fulfill a strictly humanitarian role as a neutral intermediary, for this reason we do not make public reference to the circumstances in which the deprivation of liberty of the person delivered could have occurred, nor do we reveal information that could affect their security. These strict protocols guarantee the neutrality, independence, impartiality and confidentiality with which we work and allows us to continue helping those affected by armed conflict and violence,” Abbassian added.

So far this year, 61 people have been handed over to the ICRC by various armed actors. The humanitarian organization reiterates to the parties in conflict that, in its capacity as a neutral intermediary, it is willing to carry out other humanitarian operations that lead to alleviating the consequences of armed conflicts and violence on those who do not participate or have ceased to participate in hostilities .
