Getting to this educational center requires more than an hour by car from the urban area. Yes, you have to go down a mountain, go through the middle of two next to a river and go up another one. Then you must walk another 10 minutes.

The Bajo Inglés community has had to survive for years the consequences generated by armed conflicts such as recruitment, displacement and various others. For this reason, at the beginning of 2022, this community called on the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to improve the structural conditions of the school and seek, in this way, that children and adolescents have sufficient motivation to go to study and find a protective space in your school.

Although it was a challenge due to the geographical conditions, the ICRC took up the challenge of expanding the capacity of the school. Initially, it was thought of building another floor, but the existing structure could not support another floor, so the decision was to demolish and rebuild. This was something ambitious that required a good budget, technical challenges and a great commitment from the community.

But, after almost a year, the dream came true. This reconstruction required more than 240 tons of materials and all that weight was mobilized by the population of Bajo Inglés which, as already mentioned, is in the middle of the mountain, behind a bridle path. “When we made this commitment, I thought we looked bad and lies, we were able to respond. We managed to move 240,000 kilos and I tell you that boys, girls, women, men contributed, everyone who came collaborated,” added Roberto Pérez, president of the Bajo Inglés Community Action Board.
