According to the Global Retirement Index 2024, the country fell two places compared to the previous year, finishing in 43rd position out of 44, surpassing only India.

Colombia faces a discouraging outlook regarding retirement conditions, ranking second as the worst performing country in the world, according to the Global Retirement Index 2024 issued by the firm Natixis Investment Managers (Natixis IM). The country fell two places compared to the previous year, remaining in position 43 out of 44, surpassing only India.

The report notes that although pension security conditions remained stable globally, in Colombia the figures showed a deterioration. In 2023, the country had obtained a score of 37% in the general index, but in 2024 this figure dropped to 33%. This drop is due to a worsening in key areas, such as material well-being and retirement finances, which negatively impacted the global ranking.

“Colombia shows an increase in two of the four sub-indexes: health and quality of life,” the Natixis IM report highlighted, although it also added that “the score in the retirement finances sub-index decreases slightly, with a greater drop in the material well-being sub-index.” This combination of factors has placed Colombia in a critical position within the index.

Some progress

In terms of health, Colombia remained in 40th place, but with a slight improvement of two percentage points in its score compared to 2023. José Luis León, head of Colombia and Peru for Natixis IM, acknowledged these advances. “It is encouraging to see a consistent set of results in this year’s index, although there is still room for improvement in most cases,” said León, who also highlighted that the country has shown resilience in key areas, such as investment in insured health.

León also noted that “Colombia’s performance in the GRI rankings reflects both progress and challenges in its approach to sustainability and quality of life.” While the drop in the overall ranking is worrying, the advances in health and quality of life demonstrate the country’s commitment to improving the well-being of its citizens.

The Natixis IM report revealed that the countries with the best retirement conditions in 2024 are Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Ireland, while those occupying the last positions, in addition to Colombia and India, include Turkey, Brazil, Russia and Spain.
