Colombia is at a crucial moment on its path towards energy transition and security, facing significant challenges, but also exploring innovative solutions to guarantee a reliable and sustainable energy supply in the country.

Data provided by Naturgas and XM reveal that the current electricity generation landscape in Colombia is largely dominated by hydroelectricity, followed by natural gas, coal and a small share of renewable energies and liquid fuels. Although this configuration reflects the diversity of available sources, it also highlights the need to further diversify the energy matrix to boost long-term sustainability.

The transition towards a more sustainable energy matrix requires the coexistence of current energy sources with the expansion of renewable energies, such as wind and solar. However, this process faces significant challenges, such as the significant initial investment required for the construction of new plants and equipment, as well as obstacles related to licensing processes and inter-institutional requirements.

These limitations could affect the ability of renewable energies to fully cover the country’s energy demand, which underlines the importance of advancing technologically and developing adequate regulatory frameworks to facilitate their integration into the Colombian energy matrix.

Furthermore, investment in infrastructure is another fundamental pillar to guarantee energy security. Colombia needs to modernize and expand its energy infrastructure, including improving transmission and distribution networks, as well as developing energy storage systems to manage the intermittency of renewable sources.

“The call is to generate consolidated structures and strategies in the medium term, optimizing existing systems, especially in transportation, being a relevant variable in the country’s energy transition that, for example, can implement gas,” said Mario Zamora, president from Mompos Oil Company.
