After a meeting with his Brazilian counterpart held at the Palacio de Nariño, in Bogotá, Gustavo Petropresident of Colombiarevealed his intentions for the coffee-growing country to join “as soon as possible” the group of BRICS.
In the meeting that Petro had with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, both leaders spoke about various topics related to collaboration and integration between South American countriesin addition to the intention to join this organization.

“President Petro expressed Colombia’s interest in joining the BRICS as a full member as soon as possible and President Lula welcomed this initiative and committed to promoting Colombia’s candidacy“, it was mentioned in a joint statement by both presidents, this in agreement with the Colombian Foreign Ministry.
Let us remember that initially the BRICS were integrated by the nations of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africain addition to the fact that Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia and Iran recently joined.
In addition to this, both Lula and Petro discussed the situations currently being experienced in Venezuela, Haiti, Ukraine and the Middle Eastareas where various conflicts, both internal and warlike, are experienced.

“The heads of state highlighted the importance of guaranteeing the maintenance of dialogue and the appropriate diplomatic channels to find a negotiated solution to the conflicts,” was detailed in another statement from the Foreign Ministry.
Finally, the leaders of Colombia and Brazil expressed their intention to work together to achieve significant results in the Future Summit of the United Nations (UN)to be held next September.
