Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo firmly expressed the Colombian government’s position regarding the complex political and social situation in Venezuela. During a speech in La Guajira, a border region that directly feels the consequences of diplomatic decisions between the two countries, Murillo stressed that, despite the existing tensions, Colombia will not break diplomatic relations with Venezuela.

The border community of La Guajira has clearly stated that keeping communication and transit lines with Venezuela open is essential to their daily lives. Fear of a possible border closure has generated concern in the region, which is why the current administration has decided to “listen to these voices and maintain open dialogue with the Venezuelan government,” Murillo said.

In this context, the foreign minister announced that a new session of the Foreign Relations Advisory Committee will be held next Tuesday, August 27, in which President Gustavo Petro will participate. The objective of this meeting will be to analyze Colombia’s foreign policies and define the country’s official position regarding the situation in Venezuela. This meeting will be key to assess bilateral relations and establish an action plan that benefits both nations.

Murillo also revealed that she has received multiple proposals and documents from former Colombian presidents, who have suggested possible solutions and positions regarding the Venezuelan crisis. She stressed that these meetings are “essential to ensure a coherent foreign policy” and emphasized that the opinion of the former presidents is fundamental to address the challenges in the bilateral relationship with Venezuela. It is expected that these meetings will reinforce Colombia’s position on the international scene and strengthen diplomatic ties with the neighboring country.

“We value the contributions of former presidents Juan Manuel Santos and Álvaro Uribe. Next week, together with President Gustavo Petro, we will hold a new session of the Foreign Relations Advisory Commission, where we will expand the dialogue on various aspects of our country’s foreign policy,” Murillo said through her social networks.

Last Thursday, August 22, the first meeting of the Foreign Relations Advisory Commission was held at the San Carlos Palace. Although President Petro was not present, the meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Murillo, former Presidents Santos and Samper, as well as former Foreign Ministers and Congressmen.
