The performance of Colombian fruit exports in the last decade has been characterized by maintaining an upward trend, standing out as a key sector for the growth of the non-mining-energy basket. In 2023, external sales of these products fell compared to the previous year, reaching a value of USD FOB 1,337.2 million, with a decrease of 8.6% compared to 2022, when USD FOB 1,462.3 million were exported.
Likewise, the volume of Colombian fruit exports maintains a trend similar to that of the value. During 2023, 2 million net tons were exported, which represents a decrease of 20.5% compared to 2022.
And in the first half of 2024, Colombian fruit exports were mainly explained by foreign sales of bananas (fresh bananas or plantains of the “cavendish valery” type), which represented a 63.4% share of the total value of the fruits and an increase of 70.7% compared to the previous year, going from USD FOB 358.6 million in 2023 to USD FOB 965.3 million in 2024.

For their part, products such as Hass avocado (15.7%), banana (6.2%), Tahiti lemon (6.6%) and Gulupa (2.9%) also represent an important item in the fruit export basket.
In addition to bananas, there was a notable increase in Tahiti lemons (51.3%), Gulupa (20.4%), Hass avocados (19.4%), Uchuvas (13.3%) and Plantains (13.3%); on the other hand, Granadilla decreased by 19.6%.
Bananas of the “Cavendish Valery” type registered an increase of 65.3% in the exported volume. With this, it has contributed to 85.1% of the weight of total fruit exports.
They are followed in order by banana, which participated in (5.1%), Hass avocado (5%), Tahiti lemon (3.1%) and Gulupa (0.5%).
Also, the growth in the volume exported so far in 2024 of Lemons (62.7%), Tahiti lemon (58%) and Mangos (39.6%) stands out.
For its part, the sandwich registered a sharp drop of 34%, going from selling more than 5,749 tons abroad in January – June 2023 to 3,793.6 tons in January – June 2024.
