In May 2018, the authorities at the airport located in the north-west of the country, Leon, arrested Freddy Munoz after they seized 350 grams of cocaine in his luggage.
But Munoz denied any knowledge of these drugs, insisting that they were put on him by his political opponents.
At that time, the authorities detained him for a few days and then released him pending the completion of the investigation.
In the past six years, Munoz was elected as a member of the Congress before being appointed as Colombia’s ambassador to Managua in 2022, a position he still holds.
The indictment comes amid a political dispute between the two countries.
Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega criticized his counterparts in Colombia and Brazil for refusing to recognize the victory of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro for a third term in elections whose integrity was challenged by the opposition and much of the international community.
In response to these criticisms, Colombian President Gustavo Petro wrote on the X platform, “At least I am not trampling on human rights in my country.”
