With a time of 47’02” the Colombian cyclist Walter Vargas of the Medellín-EPM team won the gold medal in the individual time trial of this edition of the Pan American Games.

The silver went to the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EF Education – Easy Post) who stopped the clock at 47’36” while the podium was completed by the Bermuda runner Conor White who does not belong to a professional team but who was recently crowned time trial champion from the Caribbean.

The route of this time trial did not present any incline difficulties and almost no technical sections, with several long straights that favored the deployment of power and a correct position. At the intermediate reference point at 20.1 km of travel, the best time was for Carapaz with the second best time for Vargas.

The Colombian runner maintained his good pace during the second half of the route, achieving at the end of the 40.2 km an average speed of 51.28 km/h, which allowed him to not only surpass Carapaz’s time (who had an average speed of 50.67 km/h) who was 34” ahead but distanced the rest of the competitors by more than a minute.

Vargas thus reaffirms his position as one of the main time trialists on the continent after having won the title of this specialty in the Pan American Road Championships held in Panama in the first half of this year.

The online road cycling test of these Games will be held next Sunday, October 29.
