The Colombian women’s national team has made history in this group stage of the Olympic women’s football tournament. They achieved their first victory in their record, against New Zealand 2-0, after going winless in London 2012 and Rio 2016, and they also managed for the first time to qualify for the quarter-finals, ensuring the Olympic diploma for the national team.

However, the aspirations of the players led by Ángelo Marsiglia are much higher. After their best performance at the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023, the tricolor team knows they can compete against any opponent and play on equal terms. Now they will have to face Spain, the current world champions.

The Iberian squad is a serious candidate to win the gold medal, with a perfect record of victories in the group stage against Japan (2-1), Nigeria (1-0), and Brazil (2-0), reaffirming their status as favorites. However, they will first have to overcome a tough Colombia team that already knows how to put pressure on a European selection as they did with the hosts in their debut.

Updates on the Colombian Women’s National Team

The group led by Catalina Usme will be able to count on Mayra Ramírez again, who was sent off on the first matchday and missed the games against New Zealand and Canada. The Chelsea forward is a key piece in Colombia’s attack due to her speed, strength, and ability to find her place in the opponent’s area.

On his part, Marsiglia also hopes to have Usme from the start of the game. The 34-year-old player was set to be part of the starting eleven against Canada, but a last-minute annoyance sent her to the bench. Additionally, other players like Linda Caicedo and Leicy Santos hope to find their best individual version before the match against Spain.

Finally, on the same day that the women’s national team will play, the other six national teams will also compete for a place in the semifinals of the women’s football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympics. The teams still in the race include the United States, Japan, Canada, Germany, France, and Brazil.
