WASHINGTON – We can’t wait a minute any longer, says Joe Biden, addressing America devastated by another massacre. The second within a week: 10 deaths among employees and customers of a supermarket in Boulder, in Colorado. The killer, now under arrest, is a 21-year-old of Syrian origin, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa. He fired an Ar-15 submachine gun, with a modified grip. A deadly weapon, the protagonist of almost every massacre in recent US history. The president, shaken, starts from here: The time has come to ban assault rifles and their ammunition. a common sense decision. I put pressure on Congress and the Senate. This cannot be a party issue. We need to act now to save more lives, American lives.

In recent years, all attempts to ban the sale of these weapons have failed. Now, Congress is examining two measures of lesser impact, but which would still be useful to contain the spread of rifles and pistols. These are measures that involve more in-depth checks on buyers’ personalities and criminal records. Biden asks the Senate to approve them immediately, as did the House, with the votes of Democrats and Republicans (in reality, the great majority of Conservatives voted against).

The president reserved the right to speak again: We are waiting for more information. The White House wants to understand if the massacre can be considered an act of internal terrorism. For the moment, the killer’s psychological profile seems to lead in another direction. He had mental problems, said his brother, Ali Aliwi Alissa, 34. Their family arrived from Syria in 2002, when Ahmad was three, and in 2014 settled in Arvada, a suburb of Denver. Ali also told the American media that Ahmad was not particularly religious, nor interested in politics; I’ve never heard him invoke violence.

However was sentenced to one year in prison in 2018 for assaulting a classmate, in Arvada West High School. He had a reputation for being a violent person, although Ali explains: He reacted like that because that boy had insulted him with racist phrases. Ahmad allegedly suffered from delusions of persecution and he would not integrate into the school community, despite being part of the wrestling team.

FBI agents have already interrogated him and thoroughly ransacked his home. Ahmad bought the weapon, a semi-automatic rifle, on March 16th, that is, only six days before the massacre. It is not yet clear, however, why he chose the King Soopers hypermarket in Boulder, an hour’s drive from Arvada. It arrives around 2.30 pm on March 22nd. Start shooting right from the parking lot, enters the supermarket and aims at the people in line at the checkout: the first victims. Ahmad goes upstairs, keeps firing. Meanwhile, Boulder police overwhelmed with calls.

Here is the first patrol. Agent Eric Talley, 51, father of 7, slings into the wards. The furious exchange of blows. Talley is killed, while the assailant is wounded in the leg. He loses control of the rifle, the other policemen immobilize him and take him away in handcuffs. A video shows it to the world: semi-naked, only with long boxers, barefoot and with a bloody leg. Between the shelves lie the bodies of 10 people. Students and retirees, mostly, aged between 20 and 65.
