Bogota:

Deadly prison riots are frequent in Latin American countries. In Colombia’s neighboring Ecuador, nearly 400 prisoners have been killed so far in six prison riots since the beginning of 2021.

Meanwhile, 49 people have so far died in riots at a prison in the southwestern city of Tulua, Colombia. More than 50 people were injured.

At trial, the tragedy was sparked by a clash that erupted inside the jail following an early-morning riot to escape from the jail. Full details of the riots have not yet been released, Tuluva prison officials said.
