comau’s Robotic Factory Revolutionizes Solar farm Construction in Spain
Table of Contents
A groundbreaking automation project utilizing mobile robotics and wearable exoskeletons has dramatically improved efficiency and safety during the construction of a solar farm in Spain. the innovative approach, spearheaded by comau, is detailed in a forthcoming case study in the International Federation of Robotics’ (IFR) highly-regarded “World Robotics” publication, scheduled for release in July 2025.
Automating Renewable Energy Infrastructure
The project focused on automating the construction of a 3MW section within EDP’s larger 122MW solar park located in Peñaflor, Valladolid, Spain. the goal was to fundamentally change how solar farms are built, prioritizing speed, worker well-being, and overall operational performance. This initiative represents a significant step toward wider adoption of automation within the renewable energy sector.
Hyperflex: A Mobile Factory for Solar Installation
At the heart of the project is Comau’s Hyperflex solution – a temporary, mobile factory designed to automate the entire process of solar component manufacturing, transportation, and installation. Hyperflex integrates advanced Comau robotics, artificial intelligence, and patented lifting technology, allowing human workers to collaborate safely and effectively with robotic systems.
Complementing the robotic systems are MATE-XT wearable exoskeletons. These devices provide crucial ergonomic support to workers performing physically demanding tasks, such as overhead work and repetitive motions. This support demonstrably reduces worker fatigue and enhances precision, contributing to both safety and quality.
Zero Incidents and Improved Efficiency
“Hyperflex’s accomplished deployment at EDP’s Valladolid solar park signifies a leap forward in clean energy,” stated a senior official at Comau. “This complete solution sets a new standard for automated solar farm construction, achieving the feat with no incidents, zero defects, and improved efficiency.” The project’s success is expected to drive further refinement of the system and facilitate broader implementation across Europe and globally.
