Commander of Russian peacekeepers in Karabakh changed

The new commander of the peacekeeping forces of Russia in Nagorno-Karabakh was Lieutenant General, Hero of Russia Gennady Anashkin, follows from the message of the Ministry of Defense of Armenia.

“During the meeting, the Deputy Commander of the Southern Military District of Russia, Lieutenant General Rustam Muradov, introduced the newly appointed Commander of the Peacekeeping Forces of the Russian Federation in Artsakh, Hero of the Russian Federation, Lieutenant General Gennady Anashkin,” the message says.

Armenian Defense Minister Arshak Karapetyan congratulated Anashkin on assuming his new position, and also thanked his predecessor, Major General Mikhail Kosobokov, for his worthy service during his tenure.

On November 9, 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan, through the mediation of Russia, signed an agreement that put an end to the war in Nagorno-Karabakh that began on September 27, 2020. Baku and Yerevan agreed on the exchange of prisoners and bodies of the dead. According to the agreement, the Armenian troops were withdrawn from the region, and the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic liberated a number of regions of Azerbaijan. The observance of the ceasefire and the security of the so-called Lachin corridor from Armenia to Karabakh until 2025 are monitored by Russian peacekeepers.

Lieutenant-General Rustam Muradov was appointed commander of the Russian peacekeeping contingent; on September 6, he completed his mission in this position, after which it was taken by Mikhail Kosobokov.
