1597 — Vitebsk received the right of Magdeburg.
1905 – Russian Emperor Nicholas II issued a decree on religious tolerance. This decree abolished repressions for conversion from Orthodoxy to other denominations. As a result, tens of thousands of former Unionists immediately converted to Catholicism in Belarus. This process acquired such a massive character that the tsarism had to restrain it with the forces of the secret police.
