We support the Ukrainians in their struggle for freedom against the aggressor Putin.
We help refugees, especially the many women and children, when they come to Germany.
We support sanctions against the Russian financial elite and the oligarchs who support Putin.
No one can play off the endless suffering of the Ukrainians against our financial worries.
But: The citizens of Germany also need help now so that the consequences of this war do not overwhelm them.
We need relief for the high fuel prices at the filling stations, we need relief for the high energy costs, and we need relief at the supermarket checkout.
Appeals like “Freeze for peace” are cynical and infuriate.
It would be better if the state would noticeably reduce VAT on all energy and consumer goods immediately and until peace finally reigns and our economy and logistics chains are working again.
The little ones shouldn’t have to foot the bill for the big ones.
