Commissioner Shabtai: “Protest is a fundamental right, but we will not settle for attacking policemen”

The Commissioner of the Police, Senior Superintendent Yaakov Shabtai, addressed the events of the protest against the legal reform and the complaint submitted to the Police for police violence against demonstrators in his remarks at the graduation ceremony of the National Police College.

The Israel Defense Forces launched an investigation into the dropping of stun grenades in Tel Aviv; Ben Gvir: “Gives complete backing to the officer”

During his remarks, Shabtai said: “This time is a complex time both criminally and especially from a security point of view. “Terrorist events have claimed the lives of fourteen Israelis recently. Each incident is investigated, studied and its lessons applied, so that commanders can lead their men to the next mission for better homeland security.”

“In addition, I would like to refer to the events of yesterday, difficult and sad events. The right to protest is the lifeblood of democracy in Israel, and the Israel Police is committed to this. We see the right to protest as a cornerstone in a democratic country.”

“At the same time, we cannot put up with violence and disorder on a wide scale, and it’s a matter of fact that, as commissioner, I can’t put up with attacking police officers. And last night we had 11 policemen injured. On this occasion, I wish both the police and the injured citizens a speedy recovery.”

“As someone who stood closely together with the senior command, and followed the sequence of events, I saw with my own eyes what happened. I salute the police and support their actions. This does not exempt us from internal investigation and learning lessons.”

“Even when the waves are high and the blowing winds are shaking, we, the Israel Police, will continue to protect and serve the citizens of the country equally and impartially according to the law. This is what we are obliged to do and this is how we will do it through talented commanders like you”, concluded the commissioner.
