Commitment reaffirmed on global challenges and the “special relationship” between the two countries

All the hot topics of the current geopolitical scenario were discussed by the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, david lammyand by the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinkenin the strategic dialogue held in London on 10 and 11 September, on which the parties issued a joint statement yesterday evening: the “unwavering support” for Ukraine, the promotion of peace and security in the Middle East, including through a ceasefire in Gaza, cooperation towards a free and open Indo-Pacific and shared priorities in Africa. Added to this are “alignment on safe, resilient and sustainable growth” and strengthening the resilience of democracies. Overall, the dialogue reaffirmed the commitment to the “special relationship” between the two countries.

On Ukraine, Blinken and Lammy discussed the next steps to mobilize military and financial resources for Kiev, limit Russian revenues and restore Ukrainian energy networks, support the European and Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine, Moldova and the Western Balkans. Concern was expressed about China’s support for Russia’s defense industrial base as well as Iran’s “tendency” to increasingly support Russia militarily and it was made clear that, together with international partners, the US and the UK are ready to take coordinated action against Tehran. The importance of addressing threats from foreign disinformation was highlighted. In this regard, a commitment to joint action was made. Both the US and the UK stressed their support for Israel’s security, but also the importance of avoiding escalation in the region and protecting civilians and facilitating the flow of aid to Gaza.

Starting from the premise that the security and economies of the Euro-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific areas are interconnected, the parties reaffirmed their commitment to continuing the Indo-Pacific Dialogue and trilateral engagement with Australia in the Aukus Security Compact. On China, concerns were expressed about dangerous and destabilizing actions in the South China Sea by Chinese vessels targeting Philippine vessels and the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait was reaffirmed. Finally, the dialogue discussed shared priorities in Africa, including ending the conflict in Sudan and supporting the sovereignty, territorial integrity and stability of Somalia, including through the transition to a new African Union-led security mission.
