London: Meerabai Chanu, one of India’s main medal hopes at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, topped the women’s 49kg event in Birmingham on Saturday. This ensured the country’s first gold medal in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

With this, Meerabai retained her Commonwealth Games title and broke the Commonwealth Games weightlifting record by lifting 201 kg. Chanu won gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast and took a 12kg lead over her nearest rival in her second attempt in the snatch round.

This is India’s third medal at this year’s Commonwealth Games
Chanu started with a lift of 84kg and later set a new Commonwealth Games record in the snatch. But failed at 90 kg. Chanu started with a 109 kg lift in the clean and jerk and later increased it to 113 kg. However, he failed to lift 115 kg in his final attempt, thus setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 201 kg.
